While Merom isn't much faster than Yonah, Conroe in an iMac would be superb with the faster clock and bus speeds.
Actually, it's quite dramatic. From those benchmarks, Intel's claims are correct; at the SAME CLOCK SPEED, Merom is 20% faster than Yonah, however, Merom comes at a higher clock speed at the same price as Yonah, making the difference even more dramatic. A 2.33 Merom is the price of a 2.16 Yonah.

I just received the Belkin Grip Vue (Tint) from belkin.com. It's structurally exactly the same as the Grip Vue cases from Best Buy, without the extremely bright and obnoxious colors. The (Tint) is translucent, so you can see your iPod logo thru the back. But it's slightly frosted on the inside, so you get NO watermarking, and it makes the back look really nice. I got the black one, which is basically a really dark smoke color. Really subtle and nice case.
One very noticeable improvement over the Best Buy Grip Vues is that the volume buttons are way easier to press. I have been using my Best Buy Grip Vue for a week, and the buttons have broken in a little and have become easier. But the buttons on the Grip Vue (Tint) right out of the box are easier to press. Maybe the clearer material is just inherently a little bit softer.

I learned on a stick first and my first car (91 Honda CRX Si ... so much fun!) was a stick. I drove in so much stop and go traffic when it finally bit the dust I bought an automatic. I miss the control and fun of a stick though. One thing I don't miss is having to replace my clutch.
Also, I disagree with the automatics are largely less efficient than sticks thought. Even without DCTs, automatics can switch so much faster than a human can that any fuel consumption it uses is offset by it's quickness. Autos have been more fuel efficient or at the least the same as manuals for a long time. I find that the size and type of tire can make a bigger difference in fuel economy anyway.

I wish whoever posted this would get it straight - Microsoft is coming out with zune to compete with iPod. They are the one with the new product that will inevitably suck.
I don't understand why this post says that Apple is coming out with wireless capabilities to compete with zune - if nobody has wireless out yet, then there is not much a competition. And it certainly isn't Apple hoping to be the ones to catch up.

Like what you've said though, there's a compelling argument to be made that a diesel-electric hybrid (like VW's XL1 Concept), with energy recovery would probably be the best arrangement (particularly for an urban car), in this instance the diesel engine is isolated from the actually drivetrain (reducing NVH etc) and the electric motors counter the age old argument of petrol>diesel refinement.
I do think that smaller capacity, fewer cylinder engines are the way to go, but only if the absolutely most important factor is addressed first, and that is one of weight, until then...
Agree on all points. A diesel serial hybrid could potentially blow any current production car out of the water in terms of fuel efficiency - triple digit mileage is possible under favorable conditions, and even more "real-world" driving mileage will be a substantial improvement over current cars.
When I look around my city and see everyone tooling around in 6.0L V8 pickups, I feel like we have a lot of convincing to do though.
Keeping weight down is all-important. Which is why I remain in love with the Lotus Elise. It proves that less weight fixes everything - better handling, acceleration, braking, fuel economy...of course in a hybrid, the battery pack is always the vexed question. Even the best batteries are still expensive and relatively heavy.

i was worried that it would only be sales... i never want to own movies, and the very seldom exception, i want to own in a better quality than what we get from itunes... they would have gotten zero business from me in movie sales, but for rentals i will use it all the time

I sure hope DanCosich's post is true! I just had my 12" Powerbook stolen from me last week and my insurance company is paying for an equal replacement or if one isn't available, the next thing up. Looks like a 15" MBP is the next thing up! Going from a 1.33GHz G4 to a C2D MBP is just a plain silly upgrade. I'm out $1000 from a deductible, but that's quite the upgrade for $1000. I'd say it was worth the theft except the fact that my car got busted up as well.

This rumor seems to be only a rumor! Its Nov 21st today, when will octos come? Next year i guess... damn it!:mad:Yeah I think this was the drop dead day for it being this year. I thought the mini would go Core 2 Duo today and even that didn't happen. May I just say that if you have an in car stereo with the capability to play from iPods, the classic is currently the only real good solution for that.

I checked around at comp usa, best buy and even the apple store to see if the mini's they had in stock would be reduced in price because of the new ones that came out.
Best buy and Comp USA had no clue that new models were released and would not budge in price. I dont know what the apple store policy is.

Consistency is "cool" and all...but I'm one of these weird people who like traditional file structures, trashcans, mice, keyboards...ya know, all that old foggie stuff;) And for the love of Caprica 6, please don't let this be a hint to future touchscreen Macs. Actually it is rather high, the machines provide quite a bit of heat too which is good in the winter but not so good in the summer. I will probably have to cut way back once it gets warm enough that I have to turn the air on which would be much sooner with the machines running. I wish I could get a receipt for the power that I use for folding it would make a nice tax write off, probably several hundred $$$ a year just for folding. As for what do I do? I just pay it and smile :p

MS hasn't bet the farm on anything. It bought into the game with a moderately high ante and has many many chips in its stack. Just because they aren't usually smart doesn't mean they will always be stupid. It could come down to Gates' successor's vision which won't be known til he's sitting in the big chair.
