I am expecting MACworld to bring (2/3 of):
A couple of interesting new MacPro BTO options.
A new iMac which is an iTV mainframe of sorts.
iTV enabled monitors.
An iTV breakout box for talking to existing computers and televisions.
802.11n in many places including a "surprise" (to some) announcement Macs have been shipping with 802.11n for several months now and it can be enabled by a software update (available today).
A consumer SAN.
New iPod games
New iLife/iWork apps and upgrades and backgrounds.
FCP update.
One more thing: Video iPod
Later: a "media release" perhaps leading to or at NAB
Later: an iTunes event announcing more movie studios and broadcast content libraries.
Later: Leopard, Mac-Mini C2D, MacMaster (workstation class system)

my local retailer told me on friday that they had been unable to order larger quantities of imacs for schools ... apple (germany) told him that they have to wait for macworld because new (upgraded? entirely new?) imacs will be presented there ...
since macworld SF has usually been a consumer-based event I think this would be possible

Supposedly the guy behind this new version is also the criminal that destroyed iMovie a few years back. God I hope FC8 isn't ANYTHING like iMovie. Old editors are too set in our ways to switch over to a iMovie/Sony Vegas style of editing. I need a preview window, and a Timeline Window. Just like when I edited on tape.

I should be posting to the 'update before the holiday season' string to help it get to 4000 posts - but I was wondering at what time of day would an update happen, were it to happen?
Anywhere from 7AM to 4PM Pacific Time... Most silent updates tend to go live between 7 and 9 AM. But I have to say that I'm only mildly hopeful for tomorrow -- Wednesday makes a lot more sense.

iTV looks more like a platform than a complete product in itself. Andy Neff also writes "Apple noted that it has a number of products currently in development that are likely to be introduced over several years."
Once upon a time, Apple used to talk about "digital lifestyle devices" or some such, but didn't release much past iPod and iSight. Perhaps this box is what they have in mind to make other gadgets go.
What would be gadgets you don't have today that would be cool if they could easily tap into the network without having to deal with a computer?

Ditto for me. I can't believe I waffled between 3GS, HTC Incredible, and iPhone 4. With 3GS 30% of my calls were dropped, with iPhone 4, 0%. Had it since July 5.

Toyota fixes all vehicles because they all have the potential to have dangerous problems.
Most iPhone owners have no problem whatsoever, and there's no danger at all to anyone.
So Toyota HAS to fix them all. It would be pointless for Apple to fix all iPhones in the field when most of them never have an issue needing a fix. But if you do have a problem, let them know and they will fix it for you for free. That's hardly a burden for such a non-dangerous situation.
We live in this ridiculous era of expectations. Apple comes out with a reasonable solution to a problem that affects a tiny percentage of users, and they get slammed for it. Hypocrisy.
Not to mention, there have been three or fewer known stuck accelerators in Toyotas out of millions of cars. I cannot imagine that there are at least that many for every manufacturer. This was a media fail for both Apple and Toyota, not a product fail.

Hope the new mac minis have a new face... since the change to intel it's been all pretty much the same, the macbook pro and the mac pro are almost identical to the old ones:(

That's because in the US most of us drive on two types of roads, crowded ones and dead straight ones. Automatics are superior on crowded ones and it doesn't matter on straight ones.
Actually, you're wrong on both premise. On crowded roads, manuals are better. No need to constantly hit the brakes, you can better control a car's speed with a manual with compression and clutch manipulation. In traffic, I hardly ever touch the brakes.
On straight roads, manual is again better. For passing, a quick throttle blip/downshift gives you better boost than waiting for an automatic to kick in as you stomp the pedal.
It's just that Americans tend to not like driving and anything that isolates them from the road is considered superior. Any driving enthousiast doesn't mind a clutch and a stick, no matter the situation.

In DP2, if you QuickLook a chaptered movie, you see the chapters (with thumbnails) listed vertically in a left pane of the QuickLook window (doesn't work quite well yet).

I forgot to mention this in my earlier post.
Netflix and Blockbuster's Mail Delivery Business Plan is flawed. Here's why:
1) Physical DVDs starch and become useless after many times of use or by shipping and handling.
2) Shipping Cost is only going to increase and this is an overhead that NO COMPANY WANTS. Plus having to maintain distributing centers in each state with physical inventory that has to be maintained, organized and checked for quality control.
3) People watch movies on an impulse. Do you ever plan what movie you are going to watch several days in advance? NO. I know at my house, we subscribed to Blockbusters DVD Mail Service only because we get 2 Free in-store movie rentals each month. This is because I don't know what I want to watch, until I go to the store and see what they have available and what MOOD we're in. Maybe I felt like a Comedy a couple of days ago, but now I want a Thriller, so instant gratification is a BIG KEY to this new service from Apple. Whatever mood you are in, you don't have to wait a few days to receive it from Netflix, just to play it and it's so starched up that you are not able to view it.

A better question is: when does the LCD OR the computer die, especially in the case of Macs? I would say never...

And, by the way, I did say "Or, more likely, when the computer is obsolete you have a good screen that you can't use." - so I clearly wasn't suggesting that LCD or system failures were that common.
